Building Regulations · Approved Document Q
Exceeding PAS 24 as standard
PAS 24 Compliance and BS EN 1627 RC4 Security Specification. Approved Document Q
Every SteelR entrance door is certified beyond the PAS 24 threshold mandated by UK Building Regulations, meeting both Approved Document Q and the fire safety requirements of the Fire Safety Act 2021. Our BS EN 1627:2011 RC4 single leaf, unglazed classification and FD30S fire rating deliver a level of protection that far exceeds the regulatory minimum.

The Four-Tier Residential Security Ladder
Standard, Enhanced, Commercial-grade, Ultra-high. Side by side.
BS EN 1627 (RC1 to RC6) and LPS 1175 (SR1 to SR8) are parallel certification schemes operating under different methodologies. They are not interchangeable. The LPCB has stated that over 90% of products tested under EN 1627 RC4 fail to achieve LPS 1175 SR2. SteelR ships RC4 as the standard residential specification on every door, with the LPCB-operated SR3, SR4 and LPS 1673 ratings as named upgrade tiers. The four tiers are not substitutes; they are layered options selected to match the brief.
| Attribute | Tier 1. Standard | Tier 2. Enhanced | Tier 3. Commercial-grade | Tier 4. Ultra-high |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Certification | BS EN 1627:2011 RC4 | LPS 1175 SR3 (Issue 8) | LPS 1175 SR4, D10 Issue 8 | LPS 1673 attack-resistance |
| Test scheme | European framework. Single leaf, unglazed methodology. UKAS-accredited laboratory. | LPCB scheme operated by BRE Global. Police-preferred specification. | LPCB Commercial-grade certification under LPS 1175 Issue 8. | Separate LPCB attack-resistance scheme. Asset-directed assault, distinct from forced entry. |
| Attack duration | Sustained forced-entry test against the complete door assembly. | Five-minute sustained attack under the LPS 1175 Issue 8 duration matrix. | Longer attack window than SR3 under the same Issue 8 framework. | Class-defined: AR.A300, AR.B180E, AR.B300E, AR.C120E. E denotes power-tool inclusion. |
| Tool catalogue | Heavy-duty hand tools and battery-operated power tools. | Issue 8 power-tool catalogue. Larger crowbar, higher-energy attack. | Issue 8 catalogue plus battery cutting tools and larger prying equipment. | Defined by AR class. The threat model is the protected asset behind the door. |
| Typical specification context | Every SteelR residential front door. The standard build. | High-value properties, conservation areas, listed buildings, insurer-specified or LPCB-preferred briefs. | Documented threat assessment, specialist private-bank clients, security-sensitive professions, layered safe-room specs. | Bank vault outer doors, data centre internal cores, embassy residences, residential where a documented threat assessment justifies it. |
| Lead time impact | Standard SteelR lead time: 8 to 12 weeks from sign-off to fitted installation. | Standard SteelR lead time, 8 to 12 weeks. Confirmed at design sign-off. | Standard plus 2 to 3 weeks. Approximately 10 to 14 weeks total. | Lead time confirmed at quote stage. Pricing individual to the project. |
Every SteelR door also carries PAS 24:2022 certification, FD30S fire and smoke rating, Secured by Design police accreditation, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 manufacturing, and Made in Britain certification. The four tiers above sit on top of that baseline; they do not replace it.
Reminder: BS EN 1627 RC ratings and LPS 1175 SR ratings are parallel certification schemes, not interchangeable. A door rated to one is not automatically equivalent to a numerically similar rating in the other.

Why new builds and flats require PAS 24, and why BS EN 1627 RC4 is what specifiers choose
Under Approved Document Q of the Building Regulations, all new-build homes and flats, including those created by material change of use, must be fitted with entrance doors that resist unauthorised access. PAS 24:2022 is the accepted standard to satisfy this requirement.
The Fire Safety Act 2021 further extended the Fire Safety Order to explicitly cover flat entrance doors in multi-occupied residential buildings. FD30S fire-rated doorsets are now the mandated minimum standard for any flat entrance door leading onto common parts.
Every SteelR door satisfies both requirements and exceeds both. BS EN 1627:2011 RC4 single leaf, unglazed certification means your door has been independently tested to withstand sustained forced entry with heavy-duty hand tools and battery-operated power tools, not just opportunist attack. It is the standard demanded by housing associations, developers and planning authorities on high-specification projects.
What your SteelR door satisfies
Approved Document Q
Security for dwellings. Mandatory for all new-build houses and flats in England and Wales.
Approved Document B (Part B)
Fire safety. FD30S rating provides 30 minutes fire resistance and cold smoke control.
Fire Safety Act 2021
Flat entrance doors in multi-occupied buildings confirmed within scope. Responsible persons bear legal liability.
Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022
Annual inspection duties for flat entrance doors in buildings over 11m. SteelR doors are designed for longevity and ongoing compliance.
Building Safety Act 2022
