Steel Door Security Ratings — SR3, PAS 24 & Secured by Design
Certified Protection
Among the most secure residential entrance doors available in the United Kingdom
Every SteelR door is independently tested and certified to the highest security standards achievable for a residential entrance. Our doors carry SR3 security ratings, Secured by Design police approval and ISO 9001 manufacturing certification as standard — not as optional extras. For homeowners across London, Virginia Water and beyond, this means genuine peace of mind.
BS EN 1627:2011
Security ratings explained
BS EN 1627:2011 is the European standard for testing the burglar resistance of doors, windows and curtain walling. It classifies products from SR1 (minimal resistance) to SR6 (government-level security) based on the tools used, the duration of attack and the skill level of the simulated intruder.
Resists opportunistic attack with bodily force alone. Typical of standard uPVC doors and lightweight frames. Offers minimal protection against a determined intruder.
Withstands attack with simple hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers and wedges for up to 3 minutes. Some higher-quality timber and composite doors achieve this rating.
Withstands a sustained 20-minute attack using crowbars, drills, chisels and heavy-duty cutting tools. This is the SteelR standard — the highest security rating practically achievable for residential entrance doors.
Ratings reserved for high-security commercial premises, embassies, military installations and critical infrastructure. These require specialist construction beyond the scope of residential doors.
Standards Compared
PAS 24 vs SR3
PAS 24:2022 is the minimum security standard required under UK Building Regulations (Approved Document Q) for new residential doors. It tests resistance to a casual opportunistic attack lasting around 1–3 minutes using basic hand tools.
SR3, by contrast, tests resistance to a sustained 20-minute attack by an experienced intruder using crowbars, drills and heavy cutting equipment. The difference is not incremental — it is a fundamentally higher tier of protection.
Every SteelR door exceeds PAS 24 by a significant margin. We engineer to SR3 as standard because we believe the minimum regulatory requirement is not sufficient for a premium residential entrance.
Police Approved
Secured by Design
Secured by Design (SBD) is the official police security initiative owned by Police Crime Prevention Initiatives Ltd. It sets a nationally recognised benchmark for crime prevention in buildings and their surroundings.
Products carrying the SBD mark have been independently tested and approved by a police-backed scheme. For homeowners, this provides an objective, third-party assurance that their entrance door meets or exceeds the security standards recommended by UK police forces.
SteelR doors hold full Secured by Design accreditation. This approval covers the complete door system — frame, leaf, locking mechanism and hardware — not just individual components.
Fire Protection
Fire rated steel construction
SteelR doors are constructed from heavy-gauge galvanised steel with fire-resistant insulating cores, capable of achieving fire ratings up to FD60 — maintaining structural integrity and preventing the passage of fire and smoke for up to 60 minutes.
Unlike timber or composite doors, steel does not warp, crack or delaminate under extreme heat. This inherent material advantage means a SteelR door provides both security and fire protection in a single, engineered system.
Manufacturing Quality
ISO 9001 certified
ISO 9001 is the internationally recognised standard for quality management systems. It requires documented processes, consistent quality control and continuous improvement across every stage of manufacturing.
SteelR doors are manufactured in ISO 9001 certified facilities, ensuring that every door — from raw steel through to finished product — meets the same exacting standard. This certification provides assurance that quality is built into the manufacturing process, not inspected in afterwards.

Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is an SR3 security rating?
SR3 (Security Rating 3) is a classification under BS EN 1627:2011 that certifies a door can withstand a sustained attack by an experienced burglar using heavy-duty tools such as crowbars, drills and chisels for up to 20 minutes. It far exceeds the security level of standard residential doors and is the highest rating practically achievable for domestic entrance doors. All SteelR doors are engineered to SR3 as standard.
Is PAS 24 enough for home security?
PAS 24:2022 is the minimum security standard required by UK Building Regulations (Approved Document Q) for new-build residential doors. While it provides a baseline level of protection against opportunistic attack, it is significantly less rigorous than SR3. PAS 24 testing simulates a casual attack lasting around 1–3 minutes, whereas SR3 testing subjects the door to a sustained 20-minute assault with heavy tools. For homeowners seeking genuine peace of mind, SR3 offers substantially greater protection.
What does Secured by Design mean?
Secured by Design (SBD) is the official UK police security initiative that sets standards for crime prevention in the built environment. Products carrying the SBD accreditation have been independently tested and certified to meet police-preferred security specifications. SteelR doors hold Secured by Design approval, meaning they have been vetted by the police-backed scheme as offering a high level of resistance to forced entry.
Are steel doors fire rated?
Yes. Steel doors can achieve fire ratings of up to 60 minutes (FD60), meaning they will maintain their structural integrity and prevent the passage of fire and smoke for that duration. SteelR doors are constructed from heavy-gauge galvanised steel with fire-resistant cores, providing both security and fire protection in a single door system. Specific fire rating requirements can be discussed during your consultation.
