What Is an SR3 Security Rating? The Complete Guide for Homeowners

Understanding Door Security Ratings

When shopping for a new entrance door, you will encounter various security ratings and certifications. Understanding what they mean — and how they differ — helps you make an informed decision about protecting your home.

The European standard BS EN 1627:2011 defines six resistance classes (RC1 to RC6, also referred to as SR1 to SR6) for doors, windows and shutters. Each class specifies the type of tools, the skill level of the attacker and the duration of attack the product must withstand.

The Security Classes Explained

SR1 (RC1) — Resists opportunistic physical force (kicking, shoulder-barging). No tools used. This is the minimum standard.

SR2 (RC2) — Resists casual burglars using simple tools (screwdrivers, pliers, wedges). Attack duration: 3 minutes.

SR3 (RC3) — Resists experienced burglars using heavy-duty tools including crowbars, drills and angle grinders. Attack duration: 5 minutes with professional-grade tools. This is the highest rating commercially available for residential entrance doors.

SR4–SR6 — Military and government-grade protection. Not typically available or necessary for residential use.

How SR3 Testing Works

SR3 testing is conducted by an independent, accredited laboratory. The door is installed in a test frame and subjected to a series of attacks designed to simulate a determined, experienced burglar with access to professional tools.

The test includes: - Static load testing — hydraulic pressure applied to the door and frame - Dynamic load testing — repeated impact using a weighted pendulum - Manual attack testing — a skilled operative uses crowbars, drills, angle grinders and other heavy-duty tools to attempt entry

The door must withstand all tests without the attacker gaining entry or creating an opening large enough to reach the locking mechanism.

Why SR3 Matters for Your Home

Most residential doors on the UK market achieve PAS 24 certification at best. PAS 24 tests resistance to manual attack using lighter tools for a shorter period. While it meets building regulations, it is significantly below SR3 in terms of real-world attack resistance.

An SR3-rated door provides: - Deterrence — visible security features discourage opportunistic burglars - Resistance — withstands sustained, professional-level attack - Insurance benefits — many insurers recognise SR3 as a premium security standard - Peace of mind — independently tested and certified protection

Secured by Design

In addition to SR3 testing, look for Secured by Design accreditation. This is the official UK police initiative that works to improve building security. Products carrying the Secured by Design mark have been independently assessed and approved by police crime prevention officers.

SteelR and SR3

Every SteelR entrance door achieves SR3 as standard — not as an upgrade or optional extra. Combined with ISO 9001 certified manufacturing, fire-rated steel construction and [Secured by Design approval](/blog/secured-by-design-doors), SteelR doors provide the highest level of security available for a residential entrance door in the United Kingdom.
